Payee verification, explained
Payee verification confirms that the name you entered matches the account behind the IBAN — before the money moves. In Europe it's standardised as Verification of Payee under the Instant Payments Regulation.
What payee verification means
Payee verification — also known as payee name verification, account name check or beneficiary verification — is the process of confirming that the payee name a payer enters matches the actual holder of the destination account, before the payment is authorised.
It exists to stop misdirected payments and authorised push payment (APP) fraud, where money is sent to the wrong or a fraudulent account. In the EU this check is standardised as Verification of Payee (VoP); in the UK the equivalent is Confirmation of Payee (CoP).
Different names, same check
You may see this capability called by several terms — they describe the same name/account match.
Payee name verification
Confirms the payee name matches the account holder behind the IBAN.
Account name check
The same idea framed around the account: does the name belong to this account?
Beneficiary verification
Used in payments and treasury to validate a beneficiary before paying.
Payee name match accuracy
Returns match, close match, no match or not possible — a clear, graded result.
In the EU, payee verification = Verification of Payee
If you operate euro payments in the EU, the scheme and term that apply are Verification of Payee (VoP), made mandatory by the Instant Payments Regulation. RoxPay provides VoP through a single real-time API.
FAQ
Payee verification is confirming that the payee name entered by a payer matches the holder of the destination account before the payment is sent. It reduces misdirected payments and APP fraud.
Yes — in the EU, payee verification is delivered through the Verification of Payee (VoP) scheme. "Payee name verification" and "account name check" are common synonyms for the same capability.
It uses standardised matching that returns match, close match, no match or not possible. Close match handles things like a missing middle name or a legal-vs-trading-name difference, so genuine payments aren't blocked unnecessarily.
Yes. RoxPay offers a real-time payee verification API: send the payee name and IBAN, receive a standardised outcome in well under a second, for both requesting and responding sides.
