Verification of Payee in Hungary
How Hungarian banks, PSPs and businesses prepare for Verification of Payee — the IBAN name check known locally as a kedvezményezett ellenőrzése — as a non-euro EU market joining the obligation in 2027.
What Verification of Payee means for the Hungarian market
Hungary launched one of Europe's most advanced instant payment systems (AFR) back in 2020, so real-time transfers are already the norm. A clear name check is a logical complement to that infrastructure.
Because Hungary uses the forint rather than the euro, its payment service providers are in the second wave of the Instant Payments Regulation: the Verification of Payee obligation applies from 9 July 2027.
Verification of Payee confirms that the name a payer enters matches the IBAN before a transfer is sent, returning a clear result in real time — a strong defence against misdirected payments and authorised push payment fraud.

Verification of Payee in Hungary
Common questions for the Hungarian market.
Yes, but from a later date. As a non-euro EU country, Hungarian PSPs must offer Verification of Payee from 9 July 2027 rather than the October 2025 date for euro-area PSPs.
It is often described as a kedvezményezett ellenőrzése — verification of the beneficiary — and works the same way as elsewhere in SEPA.
The Instant Payments Regulation gives non-euro-area member states more time, so countries using their own currency like Hungary join the VoP obligation on 9 July 2027.
By connecting to the SEPA VoP scheme through a provider like RoxPay, a Hungarian PSP can go live with a single integration well ahead of the 2027 deadline.
